TRAINING COURSE: Food security and rural rehabilitation: a general overview

TRAINING COURSE Training methodologies: different approaches (in class, on the job) The scope of this one-day course is to update the trainees know how in the teaching procedures and methodologies. In particular, the following are envisaged to be some of the main issues of the lectures: Ø Selection of didactical material Ø Organization of a programs Ø How to set up the objectives of a course. Ø Testing and assessment of the results. Ø Self evaluation process. This module will take place in Kabul and will last 12 hours (2 days, 6 hours/day). Food security and rural rehabilitation: a general overview This course will be held by an international expert. Its objective is that of providing a general overview of the recent evolutions in the field of food security and rural rehabilitation policies. Following are some of the main issues that will be part of the course program: Ø Food security and food insecurity: a glance to i) different definitions (World Bank, FAO, IAWG-FIVIMS) ii) measures of undernourishment (the cal/cap/day amount and the thresholds set by FAO -the minimum required in order to have an adequate dietary regime-) iii) general situation and trends in the developing countries. Ø Transitory food insecurity: a brief analysis of some of the variables that influence it i) world food prices ii) domestic food prices iii) household purchasing power iv) external macroeconomic shocks and v) natural shocks. Ø Chronic food insecurity: general overview of some of the main features i) low farm production diversification ii) poorly and not uniformly developed markets iii) transport net deficiencies iv) badly managed food reserves. Ø Rural Rehabilitation: overview of some of the main adopted strategies such as i) enhancing farm production diversification and commercialisation ii) improving the access to inputs iii) developing subsidy policies and starter pack initiatives iv) facilitating the liberalization process v) empowering import-export relations and the transport net vi) improving food and inputs reserves management. The course will last 2 days, for a total of 12 hours (6 hours/day). Production and processing methodologies Some of the most traded good in Afghanistan are dried fruits. Their processing could produce valuable income-generating opportunities. The training course will provide theoretical and technical information about production, treatment, transformation and marketing of the following products: mulberry, apricots, plum and grapes. The course will be divided into 4 modules: each one of them will be lasting 24 hours (divided into 4 days, 6 hours/day). The lectures structure of each module is envisaged to be as follows: Ø Production Ø The drying process: new technologies Ø The tools Ø The packaging process Ø The assessment of the quality Ø From output to market This course will focus on the theory side and it will be held in the classroom.
